St Nicholas Naval

The Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is the last and largest of the naval cathedrals built in the Russian Empire. It was built in 1903-1913 in Kronstadt, in the Neo-Byzantine style, according to the project of the architect Vasily Kosyakov.
Vasily Kosyakov wrote in 1910: “Since 1902, the construction of the Naval Cathedral, a monument to those who died in the line of duty near the city of Kronstadt.

CINEMA "MAKSIMKA"
In 1929, it was decided to use the temple building for cultural and educational purposes. Inside the temple, a wooden box is being built to cover the decoration and a cinema named after Maxim Gorky is opened, the screen of which is placed instead of the altar.

During the World War II an artillery post was arranged on the roof of the cathedral, which played a crucial role in the defence of Kronstadt and Leningrad.

In 1995, the Naval Cathedral received the status of an architectural monument of federal significance. A decision was made on a complete restoration. In 2002, the Сross was restored on the dome of the cathedral, and in 2003 it was transferred to the St. Petersburg diocese.

CULTURAL CENTER
In 1954, the cinema ceased to exist and a branch of the House of Officers was opened in the cathedral. Reinforced concrete structures were built inside, a stage was built in place of the altar, and frescoes and murals were smeared with concrete.

This book is addressed to everyone who can contribute to the revival of the temples-monuments of the Russian fleet.

NAVAL CATHEDRAL IN KRONSTADT
The publication is dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy and the 85th anniversary of the consecration of the Naval Cathedral in Kronstadt.
To complete the story about the creation of the Memorial Temple by its architect Vasily Kosyakov, the compiler of the book, Anatoly Shumsky, collected more than 200 pages of articles, appeals, documents, photo illustrations, historical references, and newspaper publications from the beginning of the last century. The book includes introductory words, a story about the work of the architect of the cathedral Vasily Kosyakov, an article by Anatoly Shumsky "The Main Temple-Monument of the Russian Navy", the history of the cathedral after 1917, photographs from 1995-1997.

Fort "Pavel I" is a monument of history and architecture of the XIX century. Created to protect Kronstadt from the south, almost completely destroyed in 1923. World heritage site, cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation of federal significance.
